A virtual winter school for young geologists has started yesterday over half of the globe in six time zones with a web-conference and e-lecture from TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany.
More than 120 participants of the winter school have followed the web-conference between partner universities and a lecture focusing on oil and gas geology from 8 o'clock in Europe, 10 o'clock in Moscow, 12 o'clock in the Urals and 14 o'clock in Hanoi / Vietnam. Nine partner universities in Germany, Austria, Italy, Vietnam and Russia, including the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, are involved in the virtual training project "Young Geologist" for Russian and Vietnamese universities. It is part of the Erasmus + project MINERAL (Modernization of Geology Education in Russian and Vietnamese Universities).
At least 20 students were enrolled by each partner university in Russia and Vietnam. Each university has recorded several lectures on correspondent to the focus of the winter school topics. For example, TU Bergakademie Freiberg has contributed to the topic "Borehole Stability in Drilling and Conveying Technology", Turino University has prepared lecture on the topics “Rock mass characterization by non-contact advanced methods” and "Brittle deformation of the rocks". Enrolled to the winter school students can watch the lectures online at home or at university. "The topics of the winter school range from regional geological features in Russia and Vietnam, to unconventional gas hydrates, to a virtual tour in the Geological Museum of the Moscow MISiS university", explains the project coordinator Professor Carsten Drebenstedt from the Institute of Mining and Special Civil Engineering of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
After two intensive weeks of the winter school and final tests, participants will receive certificates on the 12th of March at the concluding meeting of the winter school.
During the next phase of the project new master's programs in "Geology of Oil and Gas" following the European model will be founded at the Russian and Vietnamese partner universities.
